Waking up before dark is not favorite thing, and I am often downright grumpy about it. On the flip side of that is that there are few things better than watching the sun rise and the colors bloom at the top of a mountain or other peak.

I forget a lot of things, but I can close my eyes and be right back in the moment, standing on the rock, watching the sun rise and birds fly.

When you have moments like that it’s easier to let the crappy moments in life slide off.

The famous Seralon steps in Rio were once just the old dilapidated steps leading up to the artist’s apartment. He began collecting and repurposing tile to beautify them, and later people from all over the world sent him tiles to use. The result is beautiful.

The Seralon steps are located in the bohemian Santa Cruz neighborhood. After seeing the steps, check out the street murals and stop in one of the cafes for coffee.

Did you know that Christ the Redeemer is almost 100 feet tall, and almost 100 feet wide? It was built of soapstone, and finished in 1931. There is a small chapel inside for religious ceremonies, worship, and even weddings. How cool is that?

If you want to get a picture with no people like this- make sure you go early! I cannot stress this enough! Within 10 min there was a big crowd!

Sometimes things on Instagram disappoint in real life- this was not one of those things. Cristo Redentador is even more impressive in person.

In the heart of Rio, just a heartbeat from the city is the most beautiful park with a waterfall straight out of a storybook.

The waterfall is just incredible with viewpoints on each side. It flows under a bridge into a little lagoon that you can swim in. It’s also perfect for photos 😉.

If you are looking for me, chances are I’m near the water and smiling like a loon. The water is my happy place.

Pedra de Telegrafo is actually an optical illusion. There is a rock shelf under me. From the right angle you can take the picture to look like you are hanging in space. There is usually a person who can take your photo (for a small fee) from the right angle. The line backs up hugely and quickly! People have been known to wait for up to two hours for this shot! Go early! I was lucky enough to walk right up.

I was lucky enough to check off another item on my bucket list- visiting Rio and seeing Christ the Redeemer. It is one of the seven new wonders of the world and incredibly beautiful.

There are two ways to get to to the top- a van service or a train. We took a private car to the park area down below and bought our tickets, then did the van service. The train service is cheaper but takes longer. Be there early as it gets very crowded very quickly. Getting there at opening if you want to have a shot at getting a picture with no people in it. Even then it’s still tricky. Thanks to @danielcabraltourguide who helped me get this shot!!!
